Bishop's University is located on the traditional and unceded territory of the Abenaki People and the Wabanaki Confederacy. The Bishop's Undergraduate Research Journal editorial board recognizes both the historical and present erasure of Indigenous peoples in Canada. However, acknowledging injustices are only a part of the process of reconciliation; conscious actions to decolonize our institutions must follow. The legacies of colonialism have molded educational institutions, thus changing the way in which we conduct and perceive research. BURJ actively endorses the process of decolonizing academia both in our own publication and academic research more broadly. By soliciting submissions from our Indigenous student body and publishing research on the evolving status of Indigenous peoples, BURJ hopes to be one part of a larger movement to decolonize academic thought and educational institutions. Decolonization is important in the context of an interdisciplinary journal, as the legacies of colonialism have made their mark across academia, not only in select fields. We encourage Indigenous authors and those researching topics relevant to Indigenous issues to submit to future issues of the BURJ.
